How does one go from point A to point B and then evolve their product once there? When working with cold process soap, there seems to be a natural evolution.
Most start with a simple loaf, once they get the mix they like, they then start working on colored loaves and techniques like simple swirls. After that the sky is the limit. As for me, my color work is still evolving and needs work.
I chose to first play with what the lye is mixed with. The vast majority of soap is made with distilled water for the liquid and lye mixture. Coffee is another great medium to use, and that was my next step. Coffee and peppermint was a nice mix, but it got me thinking about what else can be used.
An internet search brought me to beer soap. I gave it a shot, and wow, hops creates a smooth feeling soap. Next I played around with tea soap and that was a blast. I like pushing the envelope, so I thought, "I need to make soap with wine!" It turned out phenomenal!
Take chances and be bold, putting yourself out there can help evolve an industry. We all get stuck in a rut at times, but remember to save some time for experiments. That's where my mind is, thinking of tomorrow!
